Munch’s laboratory: Opening speech

Speech by Her Majesty The Queen at the opening of the exhibition "Munch's laboratory. The path to the Aula", Munch Museum, Saturday 3 September 2011.

Dear friends of Munch,

The decoration of the University’s Great Hall is among the most experimental in Europe, and is comprised of the largest expressionist paintings known to us. The paintings have indeed become an institutional and national treasure. As we have just heard, Munch’s path to the Aula was difficult, and the outcome was highly uncertain. This exhibition will give us deeper understanding and knowledge of the work efforts behind this powerful artistic treasure.

Munch’s art has an impact on people worldwide and the international interest in his art is increasing. Later this month another extensive Munch exhibition is opening at Centre Pompidou in Paris. In 2012 the exhibition will travel to Schirn in Frankfurt and the Tate Modern in London. The commitments of these important museums can be seen as an acknowledgement of Munch’s strong international position.

Now it is my pleasure to declare this exhibition “Munch’s laboratory. The path to the Aula.” open.
