International Polar Year 2007-2008
His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon presided over the Norwegian opening of International Polar Year in a ceremony at Oslo Town Hall.
The International Polar Year (IPY) was officially opened on 1 March 2007 in many locations around the world. The Crown Prince conducted the opening ceremonies in Norway at Oslo Town Hall. Over 3,000 fourth and fifth-grade children were invited to attend the event, which included entertainment and a variety of activities. Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg was also present.
The International Polar Year is a large-scale research collaboration under the auspices of the International Council for Science (CSU) and the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). The Crown Prince is the patron of the Norwegian International Polar Year. Norway is an important financial contributor to the programme and is involved in numerous research projects. In Norway, International Polar Year is directed by the Research Council of Norway.
