Each of the four carried a single red rose, which they placed among the thousands of flowers that have been brought to Palace Square over the past few days.

The first flowers appeared as soon as news broke that King Harald’s health had seriously deteriorated. In the four days since his death, a sea of flowers and candles, flags and tributes has grown across the Palace Square.

Many people have wished to pay their respects to King Harald in this way. King Haakon offered them his special thanks in his tribute to his father.

– We greatly mourn his loss. At the same time, it gives us consolation and strength to know that there are so many who are grieving with us. It has been deeply moving to see all the people, candles, messages and flowers filling up the Palace Square. Thank you.
