The Monarchy

Norway is a constitutional monarchy. His Majesty The King is the head of state but his duties are mainly representative and ceremonial. The legislative and executive powers lie with the country’s elected bodies.

The King’s constitutional duties are laid down in the Constitution. In addition to the obligations described there, the Royal House plays an important role as a non-political, unifying force in our country. It highlights important values, individuals, and institutions that deserve attention. The Royal House represents Norway abroad and helps strengthen Norwegian interests in other countries and regions of the world.
