This marks the first time a Moldovan president has visited Norway, and the state visit signifies the strengthening of ties between Norway and Moldova in recent years.

The visit began with an official welcoming ceremony in Palace Square Monday. President Sandu arrived at the ceremony accompanied by Crown Prince Haakon, and was welcomed by Their Majesties The King and Queen and Crown Princess Mette-Marit.

The national anthems of both countries were sung, and then President Maia Sandu was introduced to representatives of official institutions in Norway.

Wreath-laying ceremony

It is a tradition for visiting heads of state to lay a wreath at the national monument at Akershus Fortress, and the President of the Republic of Moldova paid tribute to Norwegians who lost their lives in the Second World War.

From Akershus Fortress, the President went to the Storting, the Norwegian Parliament, where she had a brief meeting with The President of the Storting, Masud Gharahkhani, and also met with the standing committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence.

The war in Ukraine has had significant consequences for Moldova. The authorities have had to deal with a profound crisis affecting the economy, energy supply, and national security. At the same time, Moldova has received a large number of refugees from neighboring Ukraine and has also embarked on extensive reform efforts.

The state visit underlines Norwegian support and solidarity with Moldova. Within the framework of the Nansen program, Norway contributes to addressing the crises in Moldova and supports the country's democratic reforms and closer cooperation with the rest of Europe. Norway has also decided to open an embassy office in Moldova's capital, Chisinau, to follow up on the support and further strengthen the connections.
