On the situation relating to COVID-19

Dear one and all,

We all find ourselves in a situation that feels unfamiliar, frightening and surreal. Our daily lives and the world around us have been disrupted. And this is still just the beginning, as we do not yet know where this will lead.

The uncertainty makes us vulnerable.

The severity of the situation makes us apprehensive.

The changes to our daily lives make us feel powerless.

Norway has been affected along with the rest of the world.

Our most important task now is to try to slow the dramatic spread – by following the directives issued by the authorities.

We can be thankful that we have political leaders and government authorities with the courage and knowledge needed to meet this situation honestly and realistically.

Norway is known as a society based on trust. Now there is a special need to demonstrate our trust in one another. Our trust that each and every one of us is taking responsibility to prevent the spread of infection. And our trust that our country’s authorities are taking constructive, wise decisions.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you at this time.

To all of you who are ill or who have ill family members.

To all the health care personnel across the country who are working tirelessly, night and day. To all who are experiencing financial loss and feeling fearful about the future. To all of you who are maintaining key public functions to attend to the fundamental needs of our country.

To all our children – who may be feeling especially anxious during this time – and who need extra focus and care.

And to everyone who is feeling alone because we have been temporarily deprived of our various shared arenas for fellowship.

I would like to conclude by reminding everyone that we all need a little extra kindness during these days. We are in this together. And together we will get through whatever is to come.
