Official visit to Korea – Day 4
On their last day in Korea, Their Royal Highnesses The Crown Prince and Crown Princess visited the shipping line EUKOR and Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan. They also attended the May 17th celebrations hosted by the Norwegian community in the area.
Ulsan, with a population of one million, lies 70 kilometres north of Busan – in the heartland of Korea’s south-eastern industrial area.
EUKOR
The day’s programme started at EUKOR shipping line – one of the world’s leading transporters of cars and similar cargoes. EUKOR is the exclusive carrier of cars for Hyundai and Kia Motors out of Korea.
Hyundai Heavy Industries
Later in the morning, The Crown Prince and Crown Princess visited Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) – the largest shipyard in the world. Here they had a chance to learn about the complexity of shipbuilding, and how the various elements are assembled to make the hulls.
Several Norwegian companies are sub-vendors to HHI, providing paint, engine parts and other types of advanced technical equipment.
The visit concluded with a business luncheon, at which The Crown Prince gave a short address.
May 17th
The Norwegian community in the Busan/Ulsan area follows the national tradition of celebrating May 17th (Norwegian Constitution Day). Most of the Norwegians living in Korea reside in this area due to the maritime activity.
In the afternoon, Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit will attended the event, celebrated in the traditional manner with speeches, songs and games for the children. Crown Prince Haakon gave a May 17th address.

Welcoming the Restauration to the US
His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon, along with a couple of thousand attendees, welcomed the sloop Restauration to New York, exactly 200 years after the vessel carrying Norwegian emigrants arrived in the United States. In 1825, they crossed the Atlantic in search of a new and better life. This voyage is regarded as the beginning of organised emigration from Norway.
Met with Governor Walz in Minnesota
Minnesota is one of the states in the United States where a large proportion of the population has Norwegian ancestry. His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon is therefore also visiting this state and its largest metropolitan area, Minneapolis–Saint Paul, during his trip to the United States to mark the 200th anniversary of Norwegian emigration to the US.
