Conference on immigrant womens issues
On Thursday Her Majesty Queen Sonja and Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mette-Marit attended the opening of a conference on immigrant women’s issues at Sentrum Scene, a public venue in Oslo.
The aim of the conference was to facilitate immigrant women’s entry into the work force. The conference marked the launch of an initiative by the Norwegian Directorate of Integration and Diversity (IMDi) to increase the participation of immigrant women in working life. The number of women who would like to be employed is high, but they face barriers in the labour market both as women and as immigrants.
The conference had professional as well as cultural components. Lul Hassan Kulmye, an immigrant from Somalia, gave a presentation in which she emphasised the importance of not giving up. Kulmye will soon complete her nursing education.
