Indonesia: Opening of Innovation Norway's new office

Speech given by Her Royal Highness The Crown Princess at the opening of Innovation Norway's new office during the Crown Prince and Crown Princess' official visit to Indonesia 26 - 28 November 2012.

Ministers, Ambassadors, Excellencies, ladies and gentlemen,

I am delighted that Innovation Norway has decided to establish an office in Indonesia – a country witnessing an impressive economic growth, increasing foreign investment, strong international trade and technological innovation.

As coastal nations, Indonesia and Norway share maritime history and traditions. The political relations between our countries continue to develop. This is much thanks to Indonesia’s belief that it could be worthwhile to talk with people from a cold country far away in the north with very few inhabitants.

Considering the obvious differences, Norway and Indonesia are remarkably united on important issues concerning our shared future. Common concern about global issues has encouraged cooperation on strategies to solve the challenges we are all facing.

The new Innovation Norway office is a manifestation of Norway’s commitment to stronger business relations with Indonesia in the long-term. Trade in goods between our nations is now 50 % higher than ten years ago, and there is still room for further growth. The new office will work with Norwegian and Indonesian companies to identify potential, find new partners and facilitate trade and investments between our countries.

Over the years, the Norwegian sailors who used to pass by Indonesia have been replaced by Norwegian backpackers and students who come to spend a few months here to learn more about Indonesia. Many Norwegians are drawn to Indonesia, and are fascinated by your country. And the Norwegian Embassy stands ready to assist them, sailors and backpackers alike.

I would like to thank Indonesia for being the perfect host for our embassy staff in Jakarta over the years. I would like to thank all the local employees working for our country. I am confident the Norwegians among you will return to home with new friends, wonderful memories and a better understanding of Indonesia and its place in the region and the world.

In opening the Innovation Norway office and the new Embassy premises, I confirm the wish of my country to remain a dependable partner for Indonesia, in business, in politics, in development and in human relations.

Congratulations. I wish you all success in the future.
