The biography of Crown Princess Mette-Marit

Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mette-Marit was born in Kristiansand on 19 August 1973. She married His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon on 25 August 2001 and became Norway's Crown Princess.

Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby grew up in Vågsbygd, Kristiansand, as the youngest of four siblings. She is the daughter of Marit Tjessem (born 1937) and Sven Olaf Bjarte Høiby (1936–2007). There are three children in the Crown Prince and Crown Princess’s family: Marius Borg Høiby, Her Royal Highness Princess Ingrid Alexandra and His Highness Prince Sverre Magnus.

Her engagement to Crown Prince Haakon was announced on 1 December 2000. On 25 August 2001, the Crown Prince Haakon and new Crown Princess were married at Oslo Cathedral. In December 2003, they moved to Skaugum Estate in Asker.

Education

In 1980, Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby began attending Slettheia School in Kristiansand. During her time at upper secondary school, she participated in an exchange programme to Australia.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit pursued higher education at the University of Agder (formerly Agder University College), the University of Oslo, and SOAS – the School of Oriental and African Studies – at the University of London. She holds a Master of Management degree from BI Norwegian Business School.

Crown Princess Mette Marit's education

The Crown Princess completed her upper secondary education at Kristiansand Katedralskole in 1994. During her time at upper secondary school, she spent a year abroad as an exchange student at Wangaratta High School in Australia.

After completing upper secondary school, Crown Princess Mette-Marit took examinations in chemistry and information technology at the University of Agder (formerly Agder University College). In 2000 - 2002 she studied ethics at the Faculty of Social Science and the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Oslo.

In the spring of 2003, Crown Princess Mette-Marit followed courses at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, where she took examiniations in Development-Experience, Theories of Development, HIV/AIDS and Development and The Global Refugee Crisis. The Crown Princess also spent three months as an observer at the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), where she focused on HIV/AIDS issues.

In autumn 2008 the Crown Princess began studying part-time at BI Norwegian School of Management in Oslo, where she completed her Master of Management in 2012.

Leisure interests

Crown Princess Mette-Marit loves to read, and her leisure interests include art, design, film, and theatre. In recent years, she has developed a passionate interest in crafts, particularly weaving and knitting. The Crown Princess also loves spending time outdoors, enjoying nature both in summer and winter.
