Royal trusts and patronage
There is a longstanding tradition of Royal patronage. Royal patronage serves to raise public awareness of an organisation or a specific event that supports a worthy cause.
In earlier, more turbulent times, patronage often involved physical protection by bodyguards or a royal letter of protection. Today, the aim is for members of the Royal Family to help raise awareness and increase knowledge of these organisations and the important work they do.
Following the death of King Harald and the ascension of His Majesty King Haakon VIII, all existing Royal Patronages are concluded in accordance with custom.
The tradition of Royal Patronage will continue, and organisations are now in the process of applying for patronage.
The Royal Trusts
Support may also be given more directly via grants from royal trusts. There are three Royal Trusts, with their own boards and statutes
