King Olav V died on the evening of 17 January 1991. At that same moment, Crown Prince Harald became Norway’s new king: King Harald V. As the night passed, mourners began to fill the Palace Square with flowers and candles.

Activities during the jubilee weekend

Edvard Munch Art Award
Her Majesty The Queen presented the Edvard Munch Art Award on Saturday, 12 December. The newly established prize was awarded to the French artist Camille Henrot.

The Nobel Peace Prize for 2015
Their Majesties The King and Queen and Their Royal Highnesses The Crown Prince and Crown Princess were in attendance when the Nobel Peace Prize for 2015 was awarded to the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet in a formal ceremony at Oslo City Hall today.
Lit the Christmas tree in London
Her Highness Princess Astrid, Mrs Ferner lit the Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square in London Thursday evening. The tree is Oslo’s traditional gift to the city of London, as thanks for the assistance provided to Norway during the Second World War.
Concluded visit in the Amazon

From business to the environment

The finale of the Queen Sonja International Music Competition, QSIMC, took place in Oslo Opera House tonight. Her Majesty herself presented the first prize to the Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen.

Tonight is the final concert of the Queen Sonja International Music Competition (QSIMC). Her Majesty will be in attendance at the Opera House in Oslo where the five finalists will compete for prestige and prizes.

Sustainable development helps to build peace
The Oslo Governance Centre was officially re-opened today. In the morning, His Royal Highness The Crown Prince participated in a seminar, the first in a series of Oslo Governance and Peacebuilding Dialogues at the centre.
Presented the Holberg Prize
On Wednesday, His Royal Highness The Crown Prince presented the Holberg Prize for 2015 to the UK historian, writer and mythologist Marina Warner. The ceremony took place in Håkon’s Hall in Bergen.
Two hundred years of sailing
For the past several days, His Majesty The King has participated in the celebration of the bicentenary of the Royal Yacht Squadron yacht club in Cowes on the Isle of Wight in southern England.

His Majesty continued his visit to the US on Saturday at Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) in Tacoma, Washington. The King received an honorary doctorate from the university, which has close ties to Norway.
